Christmas Leftovers

by Sheldon Kotyk on December 18, 2011

It is the time of year where we find ourselves in between family gatherings, trips to the mall and way too much food. It is also the occasion to remember what was happening just over two thousand years ago.

Some of us travel to visit family. A very pregnant Mary and a (most likely stressed) Joseph were making their way to the town of Bethlehem for a census. Can you imagine the government making us go back to our birth place to get counted? We don’t even like to fill in a form every few years.

We drive all over the city looking for the perfect gift. Some wise gentlemen were told by God that it was time to go see the King. They packed up some expensive perfumes and gold for gifts and started a trip, probably lasting many weeks if not months. They didn’t complain about airline fees and fuel surcharges like we do. They were more interested in kneeling before the King of the Jews, depending on God’s GPS, a shining star, to guide their way through the desert.

We have trouble getting to sleep as we think of all the things left to do. Mary and Joseph had issues finding a place to sleep, finally settling in a cave or a stable. The animals, although probably smelling quite awful, were a source of heat for Mary as she gave birth to the saviour of all mankind. A group of shepherds were told by angels to go and visit the brand new baby. They found Jesus laying in a manger. Imagine the distress they felt. These men knew what a manger was for. It was for the animals to eat food out of.

The trough was all that was remaining for accomodations. The hotels in Bethlehem were packed with people for the census. The Messiah arrives and is relegated to what is left over.

This Christmas, is your life flashing a No Vacancy sign when Jesus wants to make an appearance. Are the Christmas parties and shopping lists keeping you too busy to see God’s flashlight pointing out the neighbour who needs someone to talk to?

Christmas is a time to celebrate Jesus’ birth and look back on one of the most important events in history. The gift exchanges and work events are good too and there is nothing wrong with having an enjoyable time with our friends. We just need to remember that the reason for the season is so that God could come down to us and save the world, one life at a time.

Actions:

  1. Read Luke’s account of the first Christmas. Don’t read it as a story out of a book. Read it as Luke’s letter to the early church of what happened and why it actually matters in your life.
  2. The Messiah has come. Give Him your life’s VIP room. Whatever was in the room before can head out to the stable.
  3. Ask the Holy Spirit to take control of your agenda and give you the opportunity to have an impact in someone’s life this Christmas.

Bangkok Pre-trip Report

by Sheldon Kotyk on October 28, 2011

First, let’s start off with a really cool story.

Dr. Muriel was a key mentor for us until she passed away earlier this year. However, the people that she was able to touch through her ministry are still sharing how she impacted their lives.

Hey Dr. Muriel! It’s been a seriously long time… two years since I’ve replied. Whoops! This year has been pretty good so far. I looked into the site you sent me a while ago and it was pretty inspiring. I’ve got good news to bring as well. Jesus is in my life now! I’ve made such amazing friends in the process too; my second family I’d say. We all go to a small church together on Sundays and Wednesdays to study the bible and God. I’ve learned a lot too. Jesus is love! God is love! It’s taken a few years but in the end, this great feeling is worth it. Some of my older friends have also “converted” so to speak into Christianity. It’s amazing, I watched as their life changed as well. I thank you so much for your help in the past! It’s really made an impact on my life presently.

I love my job!

Bangkok Update

The trip is on! I found out Thursday AM that even though much of Bangkok is experiencing flooding, the hotel, airport and road in between is at a higher elevation and in a different area of Bangkok than what you see on the news.

Speaking of the news, compare these two pictures. Don’t believe everything you see in the media. They sell emotion and do a good job of doing it. Richard’s twitter account is a good balance of what is actually happening on the ground in Thailand.

However, this weekend they are expecting both high tide and a large amount of water coming from the north to hit. When I arrive in Bangkok I’m not quite sure what I’ll find. I expect that the three days of “tourism” that Luke and I were going to spend doing tourist things may be spent helping out with sandbagging instead.

So pray for the conference, the attendees but even more, pray for our Thai staff as their houses are in danger.

Pray for us

  • Our TMC developer has been experiencing issues with immigration. Pray that his permanent residency will come through so he can work for us.
  • Our TMC support and client rep flew to Winnipeg early Friday morning after her mom had an aortal aneurism. Surgery was successful but it is still a wait and see approach.
  • Brett, the son of Karen, the TM director, is currently undergoing testing to find out what is causing some problems with his health.
  • Pray for Julie and the kids. Although we have Grandma staying with them while I am gone, it is still a crazy environment. In fact, as I’m writing this they are screaming and running around. I need to find some Advil.

Half way through the month of May, I was given two weeks notice that one of my developers was leaving for another employment opportunity. Having gone through this before a few times, I kept telling myself that God is in control and He would provide. It is with great happiness I can say that God [...]

June 2, 2011

I just want to start off by saying thank you for just being here, listening and answering my questions. I woke up this morning and went to my email and read your email and in some weird way I just knew I was ready to accept Christ into my life so I said that prayer [...]

Project 1200

April 15, 2011

I’m sorry about the crickets chirping around here lately. The lack of updates in March wasn’t due to a lack of activity or an abundance of boredom. In fact, March and thus far in April, I’ve been incredibly focused in on multiple intense projects. Now that I have an hour to breathe, I’ll bring you [...]

What must I do?

January 21, 2011

The amazing thing about working in a ministry like TruthMedia is hearing stories from staff like this one, told by our ministry director. Recently, a man in our chat room was asking about salvation. He asked “what must I do?” Warren, one of our staff told him that it’s more about who you know then [...]

Acting

January 16, 2011

It has been an interesting month since I last posted to THIP. Christmas came and went and 2010 came to an end. The kids are all growing up like weeds/flowers, depending on the hour. Kristin (6) is turning into a little lady while still keeping her personality on the strong side. Ava (5) is starting [...]
